Physics Are Complicated
May 14th, 2008

Just finished reading The Trouble With Physics by Lee Smolin. It’s the last item on my “Winter” reading list. The book walks through the concept of String Theory and discusses how and why it’s led to a crisis in theoretical physics. The author does a good job of simplifying the concepts, though not being familiar with a great deal of physics myself, my comprehension levels didn’t rank very high. On the other hand, the book paints a good picture of a movement in a technical field and how politics has gotten in the way of progress. He spends a great deal of time deriding aspects of academia which he views as a central piece to the current problems in the field. Overall an interesting read, and it certainly adds some perspective to an otherwise mysterious topic.
